Note: I regularly contact my congressmen concerning issues in Sudan. Here is a portion of a recent response from Sen. Mark Pryor of Arkansas. I want to let my readers know that the U.S. is active in promoting peace in the region.
Dear Ms. Youree,
Thank you for contacting me regarding the situation in Sudan. I appreciate hearing from you on this important topic.
I was pleased to see the Republic of South Sudan celebrate its independence on July 9, 2011. However, like you, I am troubled by reports of escalating violence and human rights abuses along the new nation’s northern border, particularly in the area of Southern Kordofan. Ambassador Princeton Lyman, the U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan, is currently working with delegates of the two nations to come to an agreement regarding the sharing of oil revenues in the area, which has been a large threat to the comprehensive peace process. I support Ambassador Lyman’s mission.
